Many of the Child of Hope pupils are coming up with productive ideas to spend their time while schools are closed and, at the same time, earn a small income. Lucas is making bricks!

Outside of the slum, many Ugandan homes have pieces of land that are under-utilised (due to lack of reliable rainfall or resources to enable farming).

Although farming is the principal activity, the land can have other uses as well. With the agreement of his father, Lucas has chosen to make house-building bricks, which requires a good amount of physical energy.

He uses a hand hoe to dig the soil, having first fetched water to soften it. His goal is to make at least 1500 bricks which he will then bake and then sell. This will bring in an additional and much-needed small income for the family.
