The reading culture in most Ugandan schools is low because of a lack of facilities. That’s not the case at our Gill Sherlock Memorial Secondary School, where a dedicated library has been established. Students can access essential textbooks to enhance their learning.

Mercy, a first-year secondary student, recognises how lucky they are to have their own library. She said, “Our library keeps us busy during our free time. We go there and read about things that we’ve been taught, and this helps us understand better. Most schools in Mbale don’t have libraries and rely upon one copy of a textbook, owned by the teacher.”

Though not yet well-stocked with textbooks, many students are keen to make use of the facility and add to their knowledge. They share between themselves the books that are available. If you would like to help stock the library further to enhance independent study, you can make a donation here.
