Father taking care of the children at home-gp.jpg

In many parts of Uganda, it’s common to find fathers at home providing childcare while their wives are away working to bring in family income. Peter and his brother are looked after by their father while their mother is away seeking casual labouring work to provide the food the family needs.

Peter’s father says he has tried for a long time to secure work but without success. But communities tend to look more favourably upon women’s needs and more readily provide them with work to ease their plight. The only time Peter’s father manages to find work is during the rainy season when people are looking for additional labour to dig their small areas of land. Nevertheless, he is happy to cook and care for his boys while their mother is away.
